The Walla Walla man suspected of driving a stolen car and crashing into a pickup Sunday was flown to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center on Sunday night.

Vernon Ray Johnson, 31, suffered severe head trauma when he allegedly hit the pickup while fleeing from police. Calls to Harborview to check Johnson's condition were not returned Monday.

The incident began when Walla Walla police received a call that Johnson was seen driving a white Honda Accord in the east end of Walla Walla about 3:10 p.m. Sunday.

The car Johnson allegedly was driving had been reported stolen to College Place police earlier in the weekend, according to police reports.

A Walla Walla police officer spotted the Honda a few minutes later, but Johnson took off, according to police reports.

The pursuit headed south and then west on Bryant Avenue until Johnson failed to stop at the stop sign at the Howard Street intersection, hitting a pickup driven by Jeffrey Callow, 62, according to police reports.

The pickup rolled twice, ending up in a yard. It caught fire, but police were able to help Callow out of the back window.

Callow was at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla on Monday morning in satisfactory condition.

Johnson, who had warrants for his arrest, is a suspect in several police pursuits involving stolen cars in the Walla Walla area and Idaho, according to police reports.

His passenger, Miranda York, 22, was released from the hospital and arrested on a warrant from a previous case. She is also being held in connection with possessing methamphetamine.
