12:08 a.m.: When I talked to Nick Connors after his 500 free victory, he was at the Metropolitan Grill for a celebratory dinner with his family. Sounds fitting for a champion.
Apparently, most of the east-side swimmers are sticking around overnight because of the ugliness over the pass. Nothing wrong with enjoying the west side a little more before heading home.
No other champions came from our area tonight, but there were some pretty good finishes in the 4A and 2A.
In 4A, Richland's Andrew Blanchard was fifth in the 100 butterfly, while Walla Walla's Patrick Giedeman (500 free) and Moses Lake's Brenden Eslick (200 free) placed eighth. Richland's Ashton Pollick won the B final of the 100 back.
Prosser did well at the 2A level, particularly in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Nolan Saam was sixth, and sophomore Will Burgett placed seventh.
Here are today's 4A and 2A results. Hope you had fun following swimming this season!

5:42 p.m.: Richland senior Nick Connors won the 4A 500 free state title. He beat out Central Kitsap's Brendan Weiner to become the Bombers' first state champion since 2009. I'll talk to Connors later. Friday night, he and his teammates went out to the Old Spaghetti Factory after the meet. If they go back tonight, hopefully he gets a big plate of lasagna to celebrate.
3:55 p.m.: Richland is off to a strong start in todays 4A finals.
Through four events, the Bombers are in fifth place with 51 points. Walla Walla is in 15th place, and Moses Lake sits in 22nd. Issaquah leads the 30-team field with 89 points.
The Bombers kicked things off with a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, and then Nick Connors jumped back in the pool and placed third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 43.57 seconds. The senior shaved more than two seconds off his preliminary time.
Richland sophomore Ashton Pollick won the B final of the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.45. Walla Walla senior Jonathon Klem finished behind him with a 2:03.47.
Also notable is Moses Lake freshman Brenden Eslick's eighth-place finish in the 200 free. He and winner Edward Kim, an Eastlake sophomore, were the only two underclassmen in the A final. Several swimmers have told me the state meet can be incredibly intimidating for a freshman, so Eslick's top-eight showing is pretty darn impressive.
The 4A results so far:
200 medley relay: 1, Stadium A (Logan Rysemus, Mateus Siquiera, Taylor Wright, Stefan Kubeja) 1:37.23; 6, Richland A (Ashton Pollick, Ryan Francis, Andrew Blanchard, Nick Connors) 1:41.13; 15, Walla Walla A (Patrick Giedeman, Jonathon Klem, Russell Skorina, Austin Garrett) 1:45.61. 200 free: 1, Edward Kim (Eastlake) 1:38.72 (automatic All-American); 3, Connors (Rich) 1:44.34; 8, Brenden Eslick (Moses Lake) 1:46.58; 11, Giedeman (WW) 1:47.31; 21, Corey Bradshaw (Rich) 1:52.99. 200 IM: 1, Rysemus (Sta) 1:50.97 (AAA); 9, Pollick (Rich) 2:02.45; 10, Klem (WW) 2:03.47; 18, Johnston (ML) 2:07.65. 50 free: 1, Chase Bublitz (Kentridge) 21.16 (All-America consideration); 15, Garrett (WW) 22.95; 22, Taylor Armstrong (Rich) 23.82.
1:48 p.m.: The Class 3A portion of the state boys swimming and diving championships is over in Federal Way. So far there are no champions from this side of the mountains.
Hanford sophomore Will Wertz came close with a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle. He later placed seventh in the 100 free and was a part of the Falcons' sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay.
Hanford senior BJ Deatherage was seventh in the 1-meter diving competition. After Deatherage graduates, the Falcons will be looking for someone to step up next winter.
The Falcons finished 11th in the team standings. Lakeside of Seattle ended Mercer Island's six-year reign as state champion, winning the team title by 11 points.
The 4A finals start around 2:30 p.m., and here's hoping we can get results to you as the meet progresses.
