12:34 a.m.: Just found out Kentlake swim coach Seth Dawson and Decatur coach Rob Hill were killed in this week's plane crash near North Bend. Erik Fulmer, Kentlake's only state-qualifying swimmer, competed at state and made two A finals. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Dawson and Hill.
12:28 a.m.: Well ... not exactly how I planned to update this blog. The WIAA site appeared to be having technical troubles most of the night. So here are the results of the 4A and 2A prelims. (Results from the 2A backstroke still aren't posted.)
1:38 p.m.: The first set of preliminaries at the WIAA Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships has been completed in Federal Way. At the 3A level, Hanford will be represented in several A and B finals Saturday.
Will Wertz will notch a top-eight finish in both his individual events. He is seeded fourth in the 200-yard freestyle final and is tied for the seventh seed in the 100 free with Noah Deiparine of Mercer Island. Deiparine's team is the six-time defending champion.
Hanford put one relay, the 200 free team of Wertz, Andrew Peacock, Cameron Sullivan and Cody Quinton, in Saturday's A final. The Falcons were sixth in the preliminaries.
Also, the 200 medley relay of Wertz, Peacock, Jake Douglas and Quinton will swim in the B final after finishing prelims in 10th.
BJ Deatherage is in sixth after the first day of diving, and Douglas will swim again Saturday after placing 12th in the 100 butterfly.
The 4A prelims start in less than a hour, followed by the 2As at 6:30 p.m.
In case you are wondering when you look at the top finisher in the 500 free, that is not Andrew McCarthy of "Pretty in Pink" fame. But wouldn't it be something if a Jon Cryer were competing in that event, too?
