Grant County sheriff's officials are asking for the public's help to solve the death of a pregnant Mattawa woman, who was shot while unloading groceries from her car late Saturday.

The 28-year-old woman and her unborn son were killed about 11 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex at 825 Third Place, said Chief Deputy Ryan Rectenwald.

Esperanza Vicente-Mestizo was 7 1/2 months pregnant. She died from gunshot wounds to the torso, said Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison.

It was not a drive-by shooting, but investigators don't yet know if it is gang-related.

No suspects have been identified, and sheriff's officials are asking for the public's help. Call the Grant County Sheriff's Office at 509-762-1160 or send tips to crimetips@co.grant.wa.us.
