Roundup: McCallum, Del Angel lead Ki-Be to third at regionals

HERALD STAFF February 12, 2012

Matt McCallum will get his shot at a fourth state medal. Cruz Del Angel will get a shot to go from state newbie to state champion.

And the Kiona-Benton Bears will be in good position to make some noise at the Tacoma Dome next weekend.

The Bears pushed six wrestlers through Saturday's SCAC regional at Zillah to finish in third place, led by the individual titles by McCallum at 132 pounds and Del Angel at 170.

McCallum, who has previous finished fourth, second and eighth at state, beat Royal's Danny Barajas 7-5 in the regional final for a reversal of their district final.

Del Angel, meanwhile, remained perfect on the season with two pins and a 13-2 major decision. He carried the title with a 55-second stop of River View's Yarik Tyutyunnik. After qualifying for state but not placing last year as a freshman, Del Angel will go there as the favorite.

The two champions will be joined by teammates Kale Setzer (fourth at 138), Todd Riley (third at 195), Cody Zyph (second at 220) and Dallon Grinder (fourth at 220).

The top four in each weight advance to Mat Classic XXIV.

Zillah won the team title, finishing 32 points up on West foe Granger. Ki-Be headed a trio of East finishers with 137 points, immediately followed by Royal and Connell.

Royal will send seven to state, led by champions Alex Myrick at 160 and Damien DelaRosa at 182. Brian Gallardo (106) joined Barajas as a runner-up.

Robert Orozco won the 145 title for Connell, which will send four to state. Tyson Brook was second at 285. Columbia-Burbank has three moving on, including third-place Zach Grimm at 160.

River View's Kyle Hall (third at 285) will join Tyutyunnik in Tacoma, while Wahluke and Mabton each sent three.

CWAC/Great Northern 2A regional: A couple of wins over familiar foes led to a pair of regional titles for Othello's Joey Gomez and Grandview's Martin Torres.

Gomez, a two-time state runner-up, heads back to Mat Classic as a No. 1 seed after pinning Toppenish's Raul Pech in 3:46 in the final at 220. Last week, Gomez took a 9-1 decision off Pech for the district title.

At 285, Torres pinned Othello's Bubba Ruiz with 10 seconds left in their match to secure the regional title. After missing out on placing at state last year as a junior, Torres figures to have a decent draw as a top seed.

Defending state champ Deer Park took the team title, though not without a fight from Othello. The Stags scored 213 points, 22 ahead of the Huskies, and have four champions among their nine state berths.

Othello also will send nine to state, with Lucas Garza giving the Huskies a second runner-up after a close 5-2 loss in the finals at 126 to DP's Cole Harris, who placed third at state last year.

Joining the trio of regional finalists are brothers Anthony (third) and Isaiah Barrera (fourth) at 106, AJ Garza (fourth at 113), Eric Garza (third at 152), Matthew Melo (third at 160) and Stephen Villarreal (third at 182).

Like Gomez, Anthony Barrera and Villarreal are state veterans, with Villarreal aiming to improve on his eighth-place finish and Barrerea gunning for his first state medal.

Torres will have one Grandview teammate join him after David Castaneda placed third at 125 to earn his first state berth.
