Our son Julian is a fourth-grader at Maya Angelou Elementary in Pasco. He has been part of the Spanish dual language program since kindergarten. We are impressed and grateful for the education he is receiving.
Maya has been filled beyond capacity since it opened. It is admirable that a special program, demanding more of teachers and administration, and the personalized instruction we have witnessed, haven't suffered despite strains from overcrowding. Julian has been blessed with teachers who not only do a great job educating but also go the extra mile, staying after school, keeping close communication with parents and truly caring about each child. Principal LeAnn Nunamaker has repeatedly gone above and beyond to ascertain the best learning environment for our son.
It is easy to be critical of the public school system and see faults rather than advantages. I believe we couldn't pay for private instruction or go anywhere else to find a better situation. I sincerely thank all those who have participated in Julian's educational upbringing.
I urge you to support a school district that has been thriving on extra effort, rather than extra dollars. Vote "yes" on the Pasco Levy, supporting basic education and counselors, librarians, art, music, physical education and other excellent programs critical to a rounded student life.
