KENNEWICK -- The Kamiakin, Southridge and Hanford gymnastics teams along with Richland junior and 2011 state 4A gymnastics veteran Carly Garland, the sole tumbler for the Bombers, will compete in the CBBN district championships at 6 p.m. today at Garland's Gym in Kennewick.
And it should prove an interesting battle between reigning 3A state champion Kamiakin and a strong Southridge squad.
The Braves boast a roster with four 2011 state 3A veterans: juniors Michelle Fletcher, Jessica Anderson, and Brittany Lofton as well as sophomore Danielle Brandon. Also bringing it for the Braves will be junior Sarah Rowell.
And the Suns will feature seniors Maeloni Ogle, Nicole Claver, Lindsey Potts and Courtney Giaramita; junior co-captains Hannah Linde and Kayla Melvin, and freshman Kiya Bjorge.
Kamiakin coach Sarah Garrett said that Bjorge, who has put in several stellar performances this season including a first-place all-around finish Jan. 12 at the Washington Open Winter Invitational, has historically inspired a fiery spirit in the Braves camp
"I have a couple of girls, Danielle Brandon and Michelle Fletcher, who keep her on her toes and she keeps them on their toes," Garrett said of Bjorge. "It's good competition."
But Southridge coach Heidi Fryer said Bjorge might just take a break today from a couple of events.
"She may have to back off on floor and vault," Fryer said, noting that Bjorge is minding foot pain in order to reach 100-percent health for regionals next Friday and Saturday at Central Valley High School in Spokane.
