KENNEWICK The Southridge boys basketball team was all but left for dead two weeks ago after losing eight of nine CBBN 3A matchups.
However, after pulling out its latest league win -- a 77-75 double-overtime victory over Eastmont in Kennewick -- the Suns are back on track for a playoff berth.
"We're still fighting!" Southridge coach Jason Devere exclaimed after Matt Mendenhall and David Mazzei combined for 47 points against the Wildcats. "This puts us in position to get in the playoffs."
The Suns trailed 34-23 at halftime, but they mounted a valiant comeback behind Mazzei, who hit two free throws with 7 tenths of a second in regulation to force overtime. Then he hit two more to force double overtime.
"Obviously at halftime our backs were against the wall," DeVere said. "I think (Mazzei) hit eight out of nine free throws from the fourth quarter through the overtimes."
