Read with interest the story about longtime Tri-Cities music teacher Mel Haug ("A man of music and mission to move onto Montana, by Dori O'Neal, Herald, Jan. 16).
Although since corrected, the original article stated: "In 1993, he transferred to Kennewick High, where he started the school's first vocal ensemble, The Madhatters." Mr. Haug has enjoyed a career filled with honors and accomplishment, but he did not start the The Madhatters. They were founded by Bill Ames, a much earlier vocal music director at Kennewick High.
When I entered Kennewick High in 1960, the Madhatters were already well established. They gave polished performances with smartly choreographed routines, the girls looking elegant in short formal dresses, and the guys were very uptown in black slacks, white dinner jackets and bow ties. In a time before all these so-called swing choirs, the Madhatters sang the very best popular music. They were in demand. There was nothing else in our area like them.
Best wishes always to Mel Haug as he begins a new chapter in his life in Montana.
David R. Nelson, Kennewick
