Chiawana beats ML for 4A wrestling title

The Chiawana Riverhawks haven't been around very long, but judging from their record, they are building quite the tradition in wrestling.

The Riverhawks won their second CBBN 4A title in three years Tuesday night with a 36-34 road victory over Moses Lake, last year's state runner-up.

"Our kids, our staff, the parents have worked extremely hard over the last three years to build this program," Chiawana coach Jack Anderson said.

The momentum swung toward the Riverhawks in their last three matches of the night.

After Chiawana's Brandon Gonzalez picked up a 5-4 decision against Brad Fox at 132 pounds, Clayton Smith earned a 22-6 technical fall over Moses Lake's Parker Hill at 138.

"We were down a few points, and I was trying to get the pin," Smith said. "I couldn't really get it, so the coaches were like, 'Cut him and take him down.' "

Smith's victory set up the decisive match at 145 between Boss Garcia and Andrew Valdez.

Garcia, the Riverhawks' captain, pulled out the win in the second period.

"He needed at least a major decision, and he got a pin," Anderson said. "He's been a great leader all season, and this was an opportunity for him to be an even bigger leader."

Other big wins for the Riverhawks included Blake Bishop's 10-8 decision over Easton Castro at 152 pounds and CJ Edrington's 9-3 decision over state runner-up Jonathan Perales at 182.

Now that Chiawana has taken down Moses Lake, the next goal is to place in the top three at state, said Smith.

"As a team, we don't have days off," he said. "We have to work and work, stay together and support each other through it."
