Mission Support Alliance and its key subcontractors are laying off 36 Hanford employees after expecting to cut up to 50 jobs early this year.
The layoffs include 12 previously approved voluntary layoffs, plus 11 involuntary union workers and 13 involuntary nonunion workers. However, eight of the union employees have seniority to take other positions at Hanford, bumping the employees who now hold those jobs.
The layoffs will leave Mission Support Alliance, which provides support services across Hanford, at 1,695 employees.
This is its third round of layoffs in 12 months, with 125 positions cut in March and 276 positions cut in September. Those earlier cuts were part of about 2,000 layoffs among Hanford contractors sitewide in 2011.
The latest round of layoffs is to align staff with work Mission Support Alliance expects to do this year.

The announcement follows two rounds of cuts this year for Mission Support Alliance and a total of about 2,000 employees laid off by all Hanford environmental cleanup contractors in 2011.

Two weeks before the end of the fiscal year at Hanford, hundreds of workers learned Monday that their names are on the list for previously announced layoffs.
Combined, the job cuts among Hanford cleanup contractors this fiscal year appear to total 1,825, most of them this month, which is slightly fewer than expected.
The year started with about 12,000 employees at Hanford. In addition, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is laying off 45 workers.

Today or Friday will be the final day of Hanford nuclear reservation employment for more than 1,000 workers.
Friday is the last working day of fiscal 2011, but many Hanford workers are on an extended work day schedule that includes a day off every other Friday, which falls this week.
CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. has announced plans to lay off 1,039 workers as of Friday, but started processing them last week because of the large number. They will be paid through this week.

Officials with the Idaho National Laboratory announced the lab needs to cut up to 185 employees to reduce costs.
Battelle Energy Alliance, which operates the lab, announced the layoffs on Thursday.
Lab officials will ask for voluntary layoffs through Feb. 21 and then determine what additional cuts are needed.
