An Othello man lost control of his SUV on a snow-covered highway near Mesa and crashed into a semi-truck Sunday night, said the Washington State Patrol.

Jose Cruz Calvillo, 24, was driving north on Highway 17 at 9 p.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, crossed the center line and struck the semi-truck, troopers said.

The passenger in Cruz Calvillo's SUV, Erica Padilla, 21, of Othello, was treated at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland and released.

Cruz Calvillo and the semi-truck driver, Laura Ferguson, 45, of Dayton, were not hurt. Everyone was wearing seat belts, troopers said.

Troopers said the crash was caused by Cruz Calvillo going too fast for conditions.

The crash blocked both lanes of Highway 17 for about 2 1/2hours.
