Here is a list of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events scheduled throughout the Mid-Columbia:
Walla Walla area
-- Traditional candlelight peace march, with The Testostertones, Whitman College's premier men's a cappella ensemble, starts at Reid Campus Center campus at 5:45 p.m. and concludes at the Glover Alston Center for a reception featuring live music by Three Strikes Trio. Refreshments will be provided.
-- Walla Walla University's Martin Luther King Jr. Day events will focus on poverty.
* Donna Beegle, a scholar and lecturer on poverty, will provide a presentation. Beegle is the author of See Poverty, Be the Difference and An Action Approach to Educating Students Who Live in the Crisis of Poverty. She grew up in poverty, the child of migrant workers.
Beegle will lecture twice today. At 11 a.m., she will present, "War on Poverty: The Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr." in the University Church.
At 7 p.m., she will present "Where Do We Go From Here? Martin Luther King Jr.'s Final Advice for Breaking Poverty Barriers" in Village Hall.
All events are on the university's campus in College Place.
Peace marches in Toppenish, Yakima
-- The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Toppenish Peace March is at 10:30 a.m. today. Participants in the march should meet at 10 a.m. at the Toppenish Market Place, 512 W. First Ave.
The march ends at Toppenish Middle School, where there will be a presentation at 11:15 a.m. to honor King's legacy and vision.
Carlos Olivares of the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic is the keynote speaker, and there will be performances by Toppenish School District students.
Yakima's 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration also includes a peace march and speeches by community members today.
People are invited to start assembling for Yakima's march at 11 a.m. at the Dollar Store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Fifth Avenue.
The march starts at noon, going down MLK and turning right on Eighth Street to go to the Yakima Convention Center, where the speeches and program will take place.
