Hermiston slips at Oregon Wrestling Classic

For the first time in seven years, the Hermiston Bulldogs came away from the prestigious Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond without a top prize.

The six-time defending 5A champs at the unofficial team dual state championships, the Bulldogs finished in second place after losing to Dallas 34-25 in the final.

It was the first close match of the tournament for Hermiston, which beat Bend 53-16 in the quarterfinals and Lebanon 49-22 in the semifinals.

Riverside finished fourth in the 3A bracket, losing to Willamina 63-15 in the semifinals and Illinois Valley 42-36 in the placing match.

Kelso Invite: Gilbert Mendoza decisioned brother Robert 2-1 in the 132 class championship battle and Deondre Sparks took the 138 title with an 8-4 over his Eastmont opponent as Pasco finished fourth overall on Saturday. Sparks was also recipient of the invite's Outstanding Wrestler award.

Willie C. Stewart Invitational: David Castaneda earned a 9-0 major decision against Kent Meridian's Jahleel Smith in the 126 class championship as the Greyhounds placed third overall in the Willie C. Stewart Invite at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma.
