SPOKANE -- Playing their third road game in four days, the Tri-City Americans finally ran out of gas Saturday night.

Dominik Uher had two goals and one assist to lead Spokane to a 5-3 win over the Americans before a crowd of 9,667 at Spokane Arena.

Tri-City (33-9-0-0, 66 points), which has lost two of its last three games, saw its lead in the Western Hockey League trimmed to one point with the loss.

Spokane (22-13-3-3, 50 points), which has points in five consecutive games, killed off a late Tri-City power play, and capped the penalty kill with a short-handed goal by Uher with 1:30 remaining to put the game out of reach.

"Physically, I thought we had more to give," Tri-City coach Jim Hiller said. "Mentally, I think that was our problem. We made more mental errors than physical errors. You always hope the best team wins, and that's not always the case."

The Americans opened the scoring at 4:17 of the first as Drydn Dow cleaned up a rebound off a shot by Jordan Messier.

Uher answered 31 seconds later with his first of the night, and Todd Fiddler gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead at 5:52.

Tri-City evened the score at 2 late in the first with Brendan Shinnimin's 26th goal of the season.

The teams traded goals in the second with Blake Gal putting Spokane out front 3-2 with a power-play goal at 6:49.

Americans defenseman Sam Grist, with his first-ever WHL goal, tied the scored at 3 at 11:28.

Dylan Walchuk in just his third game with the Chiefs, put the game winner in the net at 7:05 of the third.

Ty Rimmer finished with 26 saves for the Americans, which will play Monday afternoon at Portland.

Spokane's Mac Engel, who has won six in a row since Christmas break, had 31 saves.
