The Seattle Mariner Caravan was in town Friday, and I had the opportunity to talk to the players and the Mariner Moose.

Usually, the players do the talking and the Moose mugs for photos with kids of all ages. The players said he is the star of the show when they are on the road. Star power deserves star treatment.

In a Herald first, I spent a little time with the Mariner Moose on Friday. He understood all of my questions, but because I don't speak Moose, we agreed with head nods for yes, a shake for no and a few hand signals.

AF: Have you been with the team all 35 years?

MM: No. (Then with his hands, indicates 22 years.)

AF: Did you start with the Mariners as a young moose, or did you have other jobs before this one?

MM: No. (Holds up one finger to indicate it's his first job.)

AF: Is there a Mrs. Moose?

MM: (He lowers his head and sadly indicates no.)

AF: Were you a baseball player when you were younger?

MM: Yes.

AF: What position did you play?

MM: (With a sweeping motion, indicates he was a utility player.)

AF: Do you prefer to ride the bus on the Caravans or get there on your own?

MM: (Moves his hands as if he is driving the bus.)

AF: Do you go on road trips with the team?

MM: Yes, then no. (Just a few.)

AF: The players get all the interviews. Have you thought about getting an interpreter?

MM: No.

AF: You've been with the team a long time. Do they offer you benefits?

MM: Yes.

AF: Is there a team veterinarian?

MM: Yes.

AF: Do you get dental and antler coverage?

MM: Yes.

SF: The team struggled last year. Was there a time you thought you might be called upon to pitch or take an at-bat?

MM: No. (Then he grabbed his shoulder and tried to rotate his arm. Apparently, he has a bad shoulder.)

AF: Have you ever thought of leaving for a different job?

MM: (With a look of disbelief, shakes his head no.)

AF: You visit a lot of hospitals and schools. Is making kids smile the best part of your job?

MM: Yes.
