While I understand the journalistic practice of answering the "who, what, when, where and why" of a story within the first sentence or two, I found the opening statement in the Dec. 10 article on the mourning of 9-year-old Sydnee Neiman totally abhorrent. I'm sure the reporter felt the sentence was simplistic and perhaps even touching, however I found it to be harsh, shocking and totally insensitive.
Was it necessary to include "who was run over by her mother in a bank parking lot" as the very first thought? Wouldn't at least inserting the word "accidentally" have been more accurate, not to mention more respectful of any family members or friends who might read the article?
It was the fourth paragraph before Sydnee's name was even mentioned, along with the fact that it was indeed a "tragic incident."
Come on Herald, let's show some journalistic responsibility.
