Bryan's Butcher Block is closed while the Pasco Fire Department investigates a fire that damaged the longtime business Friday night.

Owner Bryan Schutz said it is thanks to a neighbor who lives in a home near the business at 6415 Burden Blvd. in Pasco that he still has a building.

A woman who was taking her dogs out saw the smoke and called in the fire around 11 p.m. Friday, he said. None of the businesses were open, and no one was there when the fire started.

"She's a gift from God," Schutz said. "She saved this building."

The cause of fire is not known, and it remains under investigation, according to a fire department news release.

The fire department has estimated the damage at $150,000, but Schutz said he won't know for sure until he is back in the building. Some repairs will be needed in the spice room, he said.

The damage was contained to the butcher shop and did not spread to Rocco's Pizza next door, Schutz said.

Bryan's Butcher Block has been open at the Pasco building since Schutz had the building built in 1999.

He said he hopes to reopen in 30 days or less, but that will depend on the investigation and repairs. He will need to get bids from contractors, but said he expects insurance will cover the cost.
