OLYMPIA -- State Superintendent Randy Dorn last week announced the winners of two elections for the State Board of Education.

Kevin Laverty was elected to Position 3 of the western region. Cynthia McMullen won the contest for Position 1 of the eastern region in a run-off election.

Laverty is a former member of the Mukilteo School Board and a former president of the Washington State School Directors' Association. McMullen is a former member of the Central Valley School Board in Spokane.

No candidate received more than 50 percent plus one of the total votes cast during the initial contest in the eastern region, which led to a second election in early December.

Those ballots were counted last week, and McMullen defeated Steve Dal Porto.

Both elected board members will begin their terms Jan. 9.
