Regarding recent letters and articles about urban chickens: To our way of thinking, there are no such thing as urban chickens. We prefer to think of our small flock as backyard pets, each with its own name, distinct personality and established position in the pecking order.

From personal experience, hens are the ultimate recyclers. They eat leftovers, weeds, lawn clippings, slugs and snails, turning them into beautiful fresh eggs. Not only are chickens useful as a source for eggs, but to those familiar with them, charming and fascinating pets.

Maintaining a small flock of chickens can help teach a child responsibility. Interacting with their flock will give them joy, relaxation and reward them with a sense of daily accomplishment.

I think it would be a sad state of affairs if chickens were not permitted to be kept as pets in residential areas. As far as them being a nuisance is concerned, instead of having to get government involved, why can't people talk to their neighbors and determine if there are any objections to plans which may affect them? Along those same lines, I support the idea of coop tours. What a great way to meet neighbors and allow children to show off the fruits of their labors.
