I had the good fortune of spending the afternoon at the Best of the West wrestling tournament at Pasco High School.
I had the wrestling beat when I first started working at the Herald, but the Tri-City Americans pulled me away from the mats. I really do enjoy the sport, and every once in a while, like today, I get a treat.
Hermiston's Joey Delgado is the real deal. If you have a chance, take the drive to Hermiston and watch and sophomore Tyler Berger.
While watching the finals, I heard my name being called behind me. I didn't recognize the face at first, but the name I did Nathan Navarro. Now an assistant coach at Nampa High School in Idaho, he wrestled at Ontario High School when I worked at the Argus Observer. He won three 3A state titles 1995 (100 pounds), 1996 (106) and 1997 (112). He had a streak of 80 consecutive wins.
He was the Joey Delgado of the late 1990s. He went on to wrestle at Oregon State (as Delgado will do next year). Now, Nathan's married with three boys and I feel older than I did when I walked out of the house.
