KENNEWICK The Kamiakin High School boys basketball team stumbled out of the gate Tuesday night, lagging 17-8 behind Davis after the first quarter, but the Braves pressed on to clinch a 67-59 home victory against the Pirates.
Davis shot out to a 9-0 lead, but Kamiakin controlled the damage, avoided an outright opening period blanking and replied with a 22-9 second quarter to gave the Braves a 5-point lead at the half.
It was enough to spark a win.
"We settled down and were able to get stops on defense," Kamiakin coach Brian Meneely said. "Getting good possessions offensively was key."
Justin Pedley and Javan Williams anchored Kamiakin with double doubles: Pedley posted a game high 21 points to go with 10 rebounds and Williams grabbed 12 boards to go with his 10 points.
David Trimble led the Davis effort with 16 points and nine rebounds.
"I was just really happy with the kids' ability to fight back out of a hole," Meneely said. "They came together as a team, just scraped together a great effort and came out on top in a a hard fought battle."
