Chiawana, Richland vie for CBBN 4A title

What a difference a year makes.

Gone are Hayley Hodgins, Mikaela Rivard and Shelby Ellsworth from Chiawana.

Gone are Mandy Machinal and Katie Mahoney from Richland.

Gone are Jordan Loera and Kayla Bernsen from Moses Lake.

With all that talent graduating from the CBBN 4A, it has created a much more wide-open league this season.

Chiawana, which finished third at the state tournament last year, has the most holes to fill, but with returners Sadie Sparks and Danielle Loving, the Riverhawks should compete for a playoff spot in the end.

Chiawana also has promising youngsters in Delaney Hodgins and Bianca Gonzales.

Richland also has high hopes after a strong season ended prematurely with a loss to Moses Lake in the consolation final of the district tournament.

Led by guards Britney Pringle and Anna Croskrey, the Bombers expect to make some noise with new-old head coach Cindy McCoy.

The Bombers also can expect more out of Lauren Perry and Kennedy Corrigan, who started as freshmen last season.

While Chiawana and Richland are attempting to reload, Wenatchee appears to be the clear favorite for the title.

The Panthers return nearly everyone from last year's squad, including Michaela George

(14.8 points per game last year), Lexxi Hallberg (11.0 ppg) and Kylie Buterbaugh (6.5 ppg).

Wenatchee has size to go along with its scoring ability, as the Panthers seek their first state tournament berth since the 1991-92 season.

Walla Walla also should contend for a playoff spot.

The Blue Devils have Maddie Jacobson, Torri Crawford and Libbie Jimenez back as upperclassmen.

While sophomores Jaiden Hodnefield and Kiana Molitor have some varsity experience under their belts after strong play down the stretch last year.

Moses Lake has struggled in the early going, but with Kyleigh Gamez, Sadie Nielsen and Courtney Kunjara back, the Chiefs should improve as the season goes.

Davis and Eisenhower have new coaches this season, as the Yakima schools look for stability that could translate to more success down the road.
