Uncivil discourse

I don't watch NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, however, I do read the news. I was very offended when I read that the band on Fallon's show played the 1985 Fishbone song, Lyin' A__B____ as an introduction to his guest Michele Bachman. Whether or not you agree with Michele Bachman is not the issue. She is a presidential candidate who was invited on a talk show to discuss her views.

I can relate to this situation on many different levels; I am female, I co-host a monthly talk radio show and I am an elected leader. When I invite a guest on my show or a constituent contacts me, I treat them with professional courtesy, irrespective of whether or not I agree with their position.

To insult someone is not the way to invite productive dialogue. It's no wonder that public discourse is so strained when it is accompanied by veiled insults and provocative comments. Issues cannot be resolved without meaningful discussion; there is no meaningful discussion without civility.
