Recount today to decide West Richland race

The Benton County Auditor's Office on Monday will recount the votes for Position 6 on the West Richland City Council.

Just 11 votes separate the leader, Ron Hayden, from incumbent Councilman Ken Dobbin in the race that drew 3,147 votes.

State law requires a machine recount when the race is less than 0.5 percent, said Stuart Holmes, elections supervisor.

County Auditor Brenda Chilton said the final tally separated the candidates by 0.35 percent.

The recount will begin at 9 a.m. at the auditor's office in Prosser.

No recount is planned in the race for Benton Fire District 6 in Paterson where one vote separated the candidates.

That is because the percentage spread is 0.7 percent since only 137 votes were cast, said county officials.

Challenger Richard Jackson will remain the winner with 69 votes to incumbent Steve McClintock's 68 votes.

The Benton County Canvassing Board is tentatively scheduled to certify the recount results at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in Prosser.
