A former car showroom on Kennewick's Columbia Drive has been transformed into a bright, lime green shop with giant colorful flowers.

Hippies, which opened in Richland in 2006, has moved to 719 W. Columbia Drive.

The store, which offers everything from tie-dye wear to hookahs, opened at its new location a few days before Thanksgiving. Tammy Adams, who owns the store with her husband Tim, said they plan to hold a grand opening sometime soon.

Customers who walk into the store to the scent of incense will see tapestries covering the black ceiling and beaded curtains. The bright flowers are repeated inside against the white paneling.

Hookahs, incense, bottle burners, water pipes and shisha, the tobacco that goes into a hookah, are some of the store's popular items, Tammy Adams said. The store also offers shirts with the store's logo.

Tim Adam's glass-blowing studio will be set up after Christmas, she said. He makes small hand pipes, and around the holidays, ornaments. He can be seen in the store blowing glass.

The size of the shop is similar to the store's former location on Columbia Park Trail, but Adams said the parking lot is larger and the visibility is better.

The new location doesn't have the 50-foot black light cave the couple created from self-expanding insulation. Adams said they decided against recreating it, because they didn't think it would be as cool as the one at the old store.

No structural changes were made to change the car dealership into a retail store. Instead, the Adams painted the store themselves to reflect their color scheme, which was based on a retro gift bag Adams said she found before they opened the store.

And the sloped ceiling helps give the store a "retro funky" look, she said.
