After Washington State lost to Washington 38-21 in Saturday's Apple Cup, The Seattle Times reported Cougars coach Paul Wulff likely would be fired today or Monday.
I'm feeling torn about this news. (Notice a trend?) It's disappointing that a loyal Coug, someone who played for WSU and wanted to return to Pullman, might not be able to at least finish his contract. Plus, he has an incredible backstory that gives him plenty of rooting value. At the same time, it's irritating to watch the Cougs fall short over and over again.
Further mixing my emotions are the sources saying that Mike Leach, who reportedly locked a player in an electrical closet at Texas Tech and filed suit against the school after he was fired, is one of the front-runners to replace Wulff. In his best season with the Red Raiders, Leach went 11-2, light years ahead of the Cougs' 4-8 record this year. But still, Washington State, compared with several other programs, has kept its nose pretty darn squeaky clean. Bringing Leach aboard could spell disaster, if the talk about him is true.
On an Apple Cup-related note, our fine multimedia folk put together a photo gallery of the big game. Check out the photos, whether you bleed crimson, purple or even a Duck green.
