UNION GAP — A wrong way driver caused a head-on crash early this morning on Interstate 82 that put another driver in the hospital, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The crash happened at 3:10 a.m. near milepost 38, two miles east of Union Gap.

According to the State Patrol, 21-year-old Elizabeth Estevez-Gonzalez was driving west in the eastbound lanes when her 1996 Chevrolet Suburban struck a Mitsubishi box van head-on.

Estevez-Gonzalez escaped injury, but the driver of the van, 50-year-old Leonid Yakobchuk of Kent, had to be taken to Yakima Regional hospital. He is expected to be released today.

The state patrol said drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, which remains under investigation.
