RICHLAND -- A Benton County inmate assigned to serve time on a work crew was arrested after he showed up at the jail smelling like alcohol, then ran away from corrections officers who tried to arrest him, authorities said.

The inmate arrived at the Benton County jail at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and corrections staff smelled alcohol on him, said sheriff's Sgt. Jon Law.

The inmate submitted a portable breath test sample for alcohol and his blood-alcohol showed 0.07 percent.

Because he was in violation of work crew rules about alcohol use, the inmate was escorted toward the jail booking area, Law said.

While being taken to the jail, the inmate ran away from the corrections officer and was able to escape, Law said.

Benton County gang team detectives later were able to find the inmate at a Richland home and he was arrested. The man was booked into the jail on suspicion of second-degree escape.

The man's name and age were not released.
