A road-rage incident appears to be what caused Kennewick police to shut down Fourth Avenue in front of Westgate Elementary School on Wednesday.

Multiple units rushed to the 2500 block of Fourth Avenue around 12:45 p.m. after a report of shots being fired, but investigators said they can't determine if there were gunshots, said Officer Ron Salter.

No evidence was recovered by officers and detectives at the scene to conclusively say that any shots were fired, he said.

School was not in session at the time. Students had been released early for the Thanksgiving holiday.

One family at a nearby home stood in the front yard watching the police activity just a block away.

"We don't have too many problems in this neighborhood," said Anthony Ray Fry, 45. "School had just gotten out and kids were walking by. It's just an odd thing to happen."

Fry was inside his home near the corner of Fourth Avenue and Conway Place, getting his Thanksgiving turkey ready.

He said he didn't hear anything unusual before the sirens started near his house. His daughter, Ashley Fearing, 22, however, said she was in the backyard and heard what sounded like three firecrackers going off.

Her husband, McKenzie Fearing, 24, also was outside, but said he didn't hear anything. He was focused on the smoke that started billowing out of a pile of leaves along the side of a neighbor's house on Dennis Street.

He ran to the yard and got a garden hose to help put out the fire while firefighters were called. He said he saw two police cars drive by, then heard the sirens and saw the road was blocked.

Fourth Avenue was blocked from Conway Place to Yelm Street for about an hour as officers tried to figure out what happened.

Broken glass was swept up from the middle of the road and police are looking for a blue Ford Ranger pickup that is said to have a broken driver's side window.

The truck also has a utility rack in back. The driver is said to be an older man, Salter said.

A short time after the call, Kennewick police officers and Benton County sheriff's deputies were seen going into a nearby home at Fifth Avenue and Anderson Street.

Officers had their guns drawn as they searched the home.

The home is where the driver of the second car involved in the road-rage incident was located, Salter said.

The 33-year-old Kennewick man was taken to the Kennewick police station for an interview and later was released, Salter said.

No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.

Probe completed into collision that killed teen

The investigation into a pedestrian vs. car collision that killed a Richland teen has been completed and forwarded to the Benton County prosecutor for review.

But, Richland police officials said that on the surface, the Oct. 20 incident appears to be accidental.

No mechanical problems were found with George Templeton's car, Capt. Mike Cobb told the Herald.

"Excessive speed is not a factor. Distracted driving is not a factor," he said.

Templeton, 58, of West Richland, was driving north on Thayer Drive around 6:35 p.m. when he hit 16-year-old Sierra Murray, who was crossing Thayer at Longfitt Street.

Murray, who was walking to an event at the school, was rushed to Kadlec Regional Medical Center with a head injury. The high school junior died Oct. 28.

It is not known how long it will take prosecutors to complete their review of the report.

Pasco man arrested after fleeing from police

A 31-year-old Pasco man was arrested early Wednesday on drug charges after he tried to outrun officers who tried to stop him for speeding, police said.

Amador Mendoza Sanchez sped away from Pasco officers in the 1700 block of West A Street around 1 a.m., said Capt. Jim Raymond.

Sanchez lost control of his car in the 2800 block of West A Street, hitting a planter and trees on the curb, Raymond said.

He then jumped out of the car and fled, but was caught trying to hide under a mobile home in the Flamingo Trailer Court.

Officers also found about 6 ounces of meth and several ounces of marijuana that allegedly was thrown away by Sanchez as he ran from police.

The seized drugs have a street value of about $10,000, Raymond said. An undisclosed amount of cash also was seized from Sanchez.

Sanchez was booked into the Franklin County jail on suspicion of eluding police and possessing drugs with intent to deliver.

3 Pasco teens arrested after multiple car prowls

Three Pasco teens were arrested Tuesday night after allegedly breaking into multiple cars on Beech Street.

Several victims have been identified and several car stereos have been recovered, but residents are encouraged to call police if they discover their vehicles have been prowled because officers have some items that haven't been identified by owners, said Capt. Jim Raymond.

The teens -- boys ages 15 and 16 -- were arrested around 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of North Beech Street, he said.

When they were caught, the teens were carrying backpacks with property that is believed to have been stolen from cars in surrounding neighborhoods.

The teens initially ran from officers and threw away stolen property as they were chased through neighborhoods north of Lewis and Wehe streets, Raymond said.

It is not known if all the stolen property was recovered.

Sex offender reports West Richland address

A sex offender considered highly likely to reoffend is living in West Richland.

Daryl Glen Roberts, 47, has told authorities he is living in the 5700 block of Wailea Court.

Roberts is 5-foot-9, 175 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

He was convicted in 1992 of aggravated battery with intent to rape in Ada County, Idaho, and also indecent liberties in Benton County.

Roberts is not wanted by police, but he is classified as a Level 3 sex offender and is required to tell authorities where he is living.
