Teachers, parents or anyone looking for holiday gifts for a school-age child soon will have another shopping option: Teacher's World.
Chrissy Viera of Pasco is opening a shop specializing in educational toys, teaching supplies and just about anything found in a classroom that would help someone teach a child.
"I'll even have dress-up clothing. It'll be a fun kids store, one that's open to all," she said.
Viera managed a similar store, Fun To Learn, at Edison Street and Clearwater Avenue in Kennewick for nine years. It closed a little more than two years ago, shortly after Viera left. Since then, teachers and parents who homeschool their children have relied on what they could find at office supply stores, places like Target and Walmart and the internet.
"I loved working at the other store so much. That's why I'm opening Teacher's World now," she said. "It's something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Business runs in the blood with our families."
Viera's in-laws own two Pasco bakeries, Viera's Bakery. Her husband works for a company that sells many of the supplies used at the bakeries. And her mother, Trish Martell, used to own Countryside Cottage, a Kennewick gift shop.
Martell retired and closed the shop years ago, but told Viera she was ready to go back to work again.
"She misses all her old customers. We can't go anywhere without running into someone she knows," Viera said.
With her youngest child enrolled in preschool, Viera decided now was the time to open her shop.
"I decided if I didn't do it, someone else would," she said.
Viera plans to open Teacher's World in early December. She is waiting for contractors to finish remodeling the store at 101 N. Union St., No. 112, Kennewick.
