College update: Wodrich, Swanson earn all-GNAC honors

Two Tri-Citians were named first-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's volleyball all-stars last week.

Lindsey Wodrich and Shelby Swanson, who both play for Seattle Pacific University, were both honored this week.

Wodrich, a senior from Richland High, was a unanimous and repeat selection at outside hitter. She led 21-7 SPU with 394 kills and had 288 digs.

Swanson, a junior from Kamiakin, was chosen as the first-team setter.

She was SPU's leading passer, with 1,147 assists.

The Falcons were ousted from the NCAA West Regional tournament Thursday, losing 3-1 to BYU-Hawaii. Wodrich had 24 kills in the match, her final match in her college career. Swanson's 49 assists gives her a career total of 2,644, putting her 11th on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-time list.

BIOLA: Freshman Christine Tixier (Hanford) finished fourth overall in the IM pentathlon at the PCSC Relay and Pentathlon swim meets at Fresno Pacific on Oct. 8. Tixier finished the 100 breastroke in 1:09.56 for a first-place finish and 2 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

BOISE STATE: Kati Lucas (Richland and Walla Walla Community College) finished the women's soccer season as the 7-10-1 Broncos' leading scorer with seven goals and one assist. Lindsay Roberts (Richland) also played for the Broncos, starting 15 matches as a defender.

BYU: Spencer Hadley (Connell) is playing linebacker for the football team. He has 41 tackles this season, and one interception, returned 48 yards.

EASTERN OREGON: Junior Lilia Najera (Southridge and Columbia Basin College) played for the women's volleyball team this fall. She had 81 kills for the 17-11 Mountaineers. ... Brian Bragg (Columbia-Burbank) finished 66th overall at the NAIA National Championships for men's cross country Saturday in Vancouver, Wash. Bragg ran the course in 25 minutes, 41 seconds.

EASTERN WASHINGTON: The following athletes played for the Eagles' women's soccer team -- sophomore forward Brianna Brannan (Kamiakin), senior forward Whitney Brannan (Kamiakin), senior defender Dashia Huff (Southridge and Walla Walla Community College), freshman midfielder Marianne Johnson (Pasco and Walla Walla Community College), and junior defender Kasey McNeill (Southridge). Whitney Brannan had three goals, and four assists for the 2-12-1 Eagles.

IDAHO: Junior Morgan Sullivan (Pasco) transferred from Clarke University to play for the women's soccer team this fall.

PLU: Kamiakin grad Bethany Huston was an honorable mention selection on the All-Northwest Conference volleyball team. Huston was the top blocker in the NWC with 138. She was also third on the 21-5 team with 191 kills.

COLLEGE OF ST. ROSE: Meagan McKinney (Kamiakin) was named to the 2011 Daktronics East All-Region women's soccer first team for her stellar play as a defender for the 20-1-1 Knights. McKinney leads a group that surrendered just 11 goals in those 22 matches this season. St. Rose plays in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals Sunday.

SANTA CLARA: Pasco's Brandon Zimmerman, a senior midfielder, was named to the West Coast Conference first team men's soccer squad last week. Zimmerman had three goals this year -- all game-winners -- and two assists for the 11-5-4 Broncos this season. Zimmerman was a member of the U.S. Soccer Residency Program based in Bradenton, Fla., from 2005-2007 and played for the U-15 and U-17 boys national teams during that time.

SEATTLE UNIVERSITY: Sophomore Shawna Anderson (Pasco) played in 19 matches for the 12-6-1 women's soccer team. She scored one goal and one assist.

WESTERN WASHINGTON: Kamiakin grad Emily Jepsen, a senior middle blocker at Western Washington, was named to the second team of the GNAC all-conference volleyball team. Jepson was No. 2 on the 16-6 team in kills with 256. ... Richland's Jamie Arthurs was named the GNAC's top goalkeeper in women's soccer. The junior had 11 shutouts for the 10-5-3 Vikings.

WHITWORTH: Two Kennewick athletes playing for the football team were honorable mention selections for the Northwest Conference squad, and both are defensive linemen: Kamiakin grad Jon Allen and Southridge grad Broderick Hirai. Allen had 38 tackles, two quarterback sacks and a forced fumble for the 4-6 Pirates. ... Amanda Grumbach, who played at Walla Walla Community College, was an honorable mention pick for the Northwest Conference women's volleyball team. Grumbach was third on the 19-7 team in kills with 205.
