TUKWILA -- Kaylie Winston has scored 51 goals in her two years at Walla Walla Community College, but the one she got Sunday may have topped them all.
The Warriors forward and former Pasco star broke through the defense in the 45th minute and beat Peninsula goalkeeper Krystal Daniels with a shot inside the far post to give Walla Walla a 1-0 win in the NWAACC women's championship at Starfire Soccer Complex.
"We had three or four good chances in the first half, and (Daniels) made two really good saves. We had one hit (inside) the net, but (Daniels) pulled it out and we didn't get credit for that," said Walla Walla coach Chad Bodnar. "They forced things in the second half to try to equalize, and we had to adjust our shape a little. It was the most physical soccer game we've played."
It was also the third consecutive NWAACC title for the Warriors, who tied three other teams -- Columbia Basin College, Clackamas and Tacoma -- for the most women's titles since 1994.
The Warriors finished 21-0-1 this season and are an inconceivable 154-6-6 since 2005 under Bodnar.
"It gets harder as you keep going, but these kids have built that tradition. This is what they do. They need to win," said Bodnar, a Pasco native who has led WWCC to seven straight championship appearances. "I think in three years we haven't lost to a junior college team. This never gets old."
