For some unknown reason, everyone seems to think the yellow school bus is an entitlement for all the students. Its original intention was for the school children who lived several miles from schools. It was never for door-to-door service, especially when the parents are home and have two cars in the driveway. Somehow the service has lost its original intention.
I do think we can still keep the buses but use them sparingly for the children who live more than a mile from the school. Use them at particular stops and make the kids walk a couple of blocks to catch them -- not at every corner in housing tracts. And absolutely no door-to-door stops. The fuel for stopping a bus increases ten-fold and the wear and tear costs go up.
Keep the school buses, lose the extra stops. Save money.
