SUMNER -- The Waitsburg-Prescott boys soccer team has been playing like champions since the program began in 2010.

The Cardinals were crowned as such Saturday, earning their first state soccer title after beating top-ranked Providence Classical Christian Academy 1-0 in the boys 2B/1B championship at Sunset Chev Stadium.

"We had pretty good momentum from the night before (a 2-1 semifinal win over St. George), so we were feeling pretty good about things," said W-P coach Mark Grimm.

The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute when Luis Torres evaded a defender at midfield and chipped the ball over the defense. Francisco Gonzalez ran onto the ball and beat PCCA goalkeeper Hayden Thomas with a low shot to the corner.

"I thought, 'Well, we got one,' but I didn't think one goal would do it," Grimm said.

From there, all the Cardinals had to do was hold on defense.

That wasn't an easy task after losing senior stopper Kevin Ortega to an injury in the semis, but freshman defender Jose Paniagua stepped in to fill his spot. W-P goalkeeper Pedro Mendoza made 10 saves for his sixth shutout of the season.

Scoring--1, WP, Francisco Gonzalez (Luis Torres), 62:28. Shots--PCCA 10, WP 9. Saves--PCCA, Hayden Thomas. WP, Pedro Mendoza 10.
