Owners of The Purple Parasol bridal shop in Kennewick are hoping this month's move will be the last.

They closed the shop at the corner of Vista Way and Kennewick Avenue in Kennewick for two days, packed up everything and reopened in downtown Kennewick on Nov. 3.

The move to 22 W. Kennewick Ave. nearly tripled their floor space.

"We went from 2,300 square feet to 6,700, and we love it," said Sheryl Brewer. "The shop is full, but now you can get around between the racks. It was tough before."

Brewer and her sisters, Shirley Giarde and Sharlene Miller, all of Walla Walla, are partners in The Purple Parasol. They have been commuting to Kennewick for nearly 25 years since opening the first store in Marineland Village.

They also have run a shop in Walla Walla for 30 years.

Both the Kennewick and Walla Walla shops carry prom dresses, tuxedos, wedding gowns, mother-of-the-bride dresses and other bridal clothing and accessories.

Their new location, in a building that used to be a retail shop -- Lantor's Clothing Store -- needed little renovation.

"All we had to do was demolish a couple of walls and put in a lot of partitions. Now we have 11 dressing rooms so there's no waiting to try on gowns," Brewer said.

With the extra space, they also were able to dedicate an area of the shop to men's tuxedo rentals. In the other location, the tuxedos were out on the floor with the women's gowns and the dressing rooms were unisex.

"The men just didn't like that," she said. "Now, they have their own space and dressing rooms. All they need to do is walk in, get measured and walk out with their suit the same day. We carry the tuxedos in stock. No waiting."

She and her sisters also increased their stock of prom, mother-of-the-bride and bridal gowns and added a few more higher-end shoes, she said.

"We have the Kate Middleton look-alike shoes and her -- reproduction -- headpiece, too," Brewer said.

Brewer said she and her sisters had searched eight months for a new location. Earlier this fall, she drove down Kennewick Avenue and spotted the "for rent" sign in the window of a tan brick building.

The owner, Roland Jackelson of Seattle, posted to sign several weeks earlier, she said.

"He told us, 'I want to make this work for you,' " Brewer said. "Now I just pray the economy gets better so we can stay here for good."

Hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday and Tuesday; from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; and from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Purple Parasol added an extra hour on Monday and Tuesday to accommodate working brides, she said.

"If she comes in at 6 p.m., she'll still have an hour to try on gowns before we close," Brewer said.
