A 23-year-old Grandview man was arrested by Benton County sheriff's deputies after he tried to run through an orchard to avoid arrest and pulled out a knife on an officer, authorities said.
The officer was not hurt, but a deputy running after Juan J. Garcia did suffer a knee injury during the chase, Deputy Joe Lusignan said.
The incident started Friday afternoon when Garcia was stopped by a deputy at Kingtull Road and Williams Road NW.
Garcia stopped initially, but then sped away after the deputy returned to his patrol car to check Garcia's driving status and learned Garcia had a warrant for his arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm, Lusignan said.
During the chase, Garcia lost control of his car, left the road and hit a power pole. He then ran into an orchard.
Officers from the Grandview and Prosser police departments responded to help deputies, and when an officer got near Garcia, he pulled a knife and acted as if he was going to stab the officer, Lusignan said.
Garcia, however, dropped the knife after the officer pulled out his gun, Lusignan said.
Garcia was arrested and booked into the Benton County jail on suspicion of second-degree assault, attempting to elude, hit-and-run and resisting arrest.
