Revenue proposal

I am increasingly concerned about the state budget cuts. About a year ago, I called state Sen. Jerome Delvin and was pleasantly surprised to hear back from him.

I shared an idea about increasing revenue in Washington. Maybe it's time that the state starts looking at how much we pay for license plate tabs. I did include in that conversation that what we used to pay 10 years ago was absolutely ridiculous, and sometimes it was $600 or more a year, depending on your vehicle.

My suggestion was to have a ceiling, possibly $245, and having the basement be $35. As your vehicle depreciated each year, the amount you paid for your tabs dropped each year by $30. Simple and easy to budget for as a taxpayer.

Delvin responded that the license plate tabs cost was an initiative that was passed by voters. I rebutted that the state employees' cost of living allowance (COLA) was also an initiative that was passed by voters. Why can't that be cut?

We are now at the point where Olympia is shortening the school year. The state needs money, kids need to be educated. Maybe they should take a look at this option.
