* 1981 -- Mark Hoitink finished third to lead Kennewick to a second-place finish behind Ferris in the Class AAA-AA boys state cross country championship at Evergreen High in Seattle. The Lions won the title in 1978 and '79, and coach Dave Rockstrom said, "We were kind of disappointed taking second. But it's been a perfect year, and second place isn't bad."
* 1952 -- Coach Fran Rish's Columbia High Bombers, angered by statements from Kennewick coaches, took it out on Naches in a 25-6 rout. Tom McKeown scored touchdowns on runs of 37 and 52 yards. Earlier in the week, Kennewick coaches said Pasco was better than Columbia. The two teams finished tied for the Yakima Valley southern division championship.
