FEDERAL WAY -- Natilee Ruiz's competition likely is thrilled the Othello swimmer is graduating this year.
Ruiz rewrote the record books yet again with her fifth and sixth state titles Saturday night at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
She notched her fourth career 2A state meet record after winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 4.02 seconds, more than six seconds ahead of Carlee Bock of Squalicum.
Ruiz nearly got state meet record No. 5 in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 51 seconds, one-hundredth of a second off the mark. But she ended the two-year reign of Anacortes senior Katie Kaestner, who swam a 52.63 for second place.
Adding to her fantastic night, Ruiz got the Class 2A Swimmer of the Meet award. She has been a state champion in every individual swim event except the 100 breast and 100 butterfly.
Also returning to the east side as state champions are Richland sophomore Lisa Bratton (4A 200 individual medley) and Hanford's Stephanie Tixier, Lisa Tixier, Melissa Merrill and Linnea Peacock (3A 200 free relay, 400 free relay).
Stephanie Tixier was the runner-up in the 3A 50 free behind Meadowdale's Anna Keane and the third-place finisher in the 100 fly.
Prosser junior Hailey Rankin just missed the top spot in the 2A 100 butterfly and 500 free, leading most of the latter race by a nose over Kelsey Crane before the Klahowya freshman surged ahead in the final 50.
In the team standings, Hanford placed third in 3A with 195 points and Southridge 10th with 90.
Richland finished eighth in 4A with a school-best 105 points. Skyline (4A, 202 points) and Mercer Island (3A, 340) each won their fourth consecutive team title, while Sehome scored 223 points in the 2A competition to edge two-time defending champion Squalicum by 11 points.
Bratton, who finished ninth in the 200 IM last year, clocked an All-America consideration time of 2:03.70, two seconds better than runner-up Megan Kawaguchi of Mt. Rainier.
"I knew they were right with me with my fly because it's not my strongest, but I tried to pull ahead with my back," said Bratton, Richland's first individual girls champion. "With my breaststroke, I was trying to hang onto my lead and swim as fast as I could because that's usually when everyone passes me. I didn't see anyone pass me, so I said, 'I must be doing OK,' and then with my freestyle, I just turned it on and said, 'No one can catch me.' "
Bratton's hopes for another title were dashed in the 500 free. She was fifth in 5:08.29, an improvement over last year's ninth-place finish of 5:11.55. Thomas Jefferson senior Amber Cratsenberg won in an All-America consideration time of 4:57.55.
"All the girls around me, they took it out and they flew," said Bratton, who later helped the Bombers win the 400 free relay consolation final. "It wasn't quite there for me, but I finished fifth, which is great."
Hanford retained its state title in the 200 free relay with the help of returners Stephanie Tixier and Merrill. The Falcons won in 1:38.46, beating Bainbridge (1:38.92) and Mercer Island (1:40.32).
The 400 free relay was a nailbiter in the anchor leg. Mercer Island's swimmer closed in on Peacock after Hanford pushed to a sizable lead in the middle part of the race, but the Hanford sophomore held on to finish in 3:34.48. Mercer Island (3:35.10) settled for second but won its fourth consecutive team title.
"We were all really nervous," Stephanie Tixier said. "Our coach Randy (Willis) was telling us we really have to pull out a lead for Linnea because she usually goes first or second. So when the Mercer Island girl was coming up, we were like, 'Go, Linnea, you gotta do it,' and she won it by half a second. It was awesome."
The victory was Hanford's first in the 400 free relay.
"All our titles have come in the 200 free relay, so they really weren't expecting it," Hanford/Richland head coach Kathy Piper said. "They tend to forget about us east-side kids, and we kind of prefer it that way sometimes."
The Mid-Columbia also brought home top-eight finishes by Merrill (third, 3A 100 free; fifth, 200 IM); Hanford's 200 medley relay team (seventh); Southridge senior Alisha Sanchez (fifth, 3A 50 free) and the Suns' 200 medley (fifth) and 200 free relay teams (eighth); Kennewick junior Hailey Murphy (seventh, 3A 100 fly); Walla Walla sophomore Emma Timm-Ballard (third, 4A 100 back); Moses Lake seniors Courtney Schwiesow (fifth, 4A 100 breast) and Sammy Hendrickson (eighth, 4A 1-meter diving); and Richland junior Nicole Weinman (eighth, 4A 500 free).
