LACEY -- The Kennewick Lions' hopes of a trophy finish at the 3A state volleyball tournament are still alive.

The Lions shook off a 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 first-round loss to Camas and rebounded with a crucial 25-11, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18 consolation win over Enumclaw to earn a shot at a trophy game today at Saint Martin's University.

Kennewick will face Meadowdale today at 8 a.m. The winner of that match will play in the seventh/eighth place game at 5:15 p.m.

"We played next to (Meadowdale) them today, so we couldn't really see a whole lot," said Lions coach Julie Maciboba. "We'll adjust when we notice certain things, and the girls will have to talk with each other about what's open."

Against Camas, Kennewick struggled with their block against the quickness of the Papermakers' outside hitters. Plus, Maciboba noticed that the Lions' energy level was lacking a bit in their first match.

"I think we were in it all three games. Things just didn't go our way," she said.

The Lions didn't let the loss get them down, recovering quickly in the locker room and getting back to business.

"I had a good feeling in warmups. They were really loose and looked like the Kennewick team I know," Maciboba said.

The Lions started strong against Enumclaw, winning the first set 25-11. That made Maciboba a little worried about her team celebrating too early.

"Yeah, we kind of did," she said.

As a result, the Hornets took the second set 25-22 before Kennewick woke up again for a 26-24 victory in the third set.

"We just started picking up our block and serve, and we got a lot more aggressive," Maciboba said.

Meghan McIntyre anchored the win over Enumclaw, collecting 22 kills in the four-set victory, but Torie Szendre swung momentum during a crucial third set with a big stuff block against the Hornets.

"It completely changes the momentum. They're coming in swinging aggressive and it just gets blocked back," Maciboba said.

Szendre and Sophie Clinton added 10 kills apiece against Enumclaw.

Desales advances to Day 2

DeSales dropped its first round match 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 against Pateros at the 2B state tournament at the Yakima SunDome but recovered with a 25-12, 25-17, 27-25 victory over Orcas Island.

The Irish will play Kittitas at 11 a.m. today. The winner of that match plays for seventh place.
