It was simply divine a taste that brought heaven to earth.
From the moment the divinity candy melted in my mouth, it was as if my late mother had appeared on the scene.
The sweet memories of my mama standing at the stove, me clinging to her apron with childish impatience while the gooey white candy cooled, stirred my emotions at a very unlikely place.
There I was in the middle of a local craft fair, feeling the tears well up and about to spill over after sampling a tidbit of the sweet delight. I imagine the Two Sisters candy makers werent used to seeing people blubber over their blissful creations. Although, many a patron might later cry over the bathroom scales.
Ill take a pound! I heard my voice shout as I pointed at the creamy divinity, not even an ounce of self-control in sight. And do you take Visa? I gulped in afterthought, my sweet tooth suddenly fearing disappointment.
No worries. The out-of-this-world divinity reminiscent of Mamas was about to descend into my shopping bag.
The card was charged. The heavenly dessert whisked from the counter. And like a woman fleeing from a Weight Watchers convention, I clutched the high-calorie item and rushed to my car.
The candy container popped open. My fingers greedily scooped the gooey contents as the taste of freshly made divinity foiled my guilty conscience.
Oh, if only mom had been there to tell me No!
One quarter pound later O.K. maybe a little bit more I reluctantly stashed the divinity in the back of the kitchen pantry. My sugar craving might be thwarted with the candy out of sight.
Several days later, its not far enough from my memory.
If theres a window in heaven, Mother will be astonished to see how much Im thinking about her.
