YAKIMA -- A man accused of gunning down a group of gang rivals outside a Sunnyside am/pm store, killing one and wounding two others, pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of second-degree murder.
Oscar Torres, 27, agreed to a sentence of 25 years in prison for his plea in Yakima County Superior Court, said Prosecutor Jim Hagarty. A sentencing date was set for Nov. 14.
Torres' plea averts a trial in connection with Jan. 4, 2009, slaying of 22-year-old Jesus Tlaseca Sosa, whose death in the parking lot of the convenience store was captured on surveillance video.
According to court records, the shooting was preceded by a chance encounter inside the store between Torres and Sosa's 16-year-old brother, Juan.
The Sosas had just arrived at the store with three friends, all of them later identified by police as Norteo gang members from Grant County. Several were wearing red clothing.
Juan Sosa told investigators he was "mad dogged" by a stranger in the checkout line wearing Sureo blue. Mad dogging is slang for hostile behavior, primarily facial expressions.
The store's surveillance video showed several members of the Sosa brothers' group advancing on the stranger outside the store as if to fight. Instead, the man produced a pistol and began shooting
Killed was Jesus Sosa, who was shot in the chest as well as foot and leg. Wounded were Gavino Lemos, then 16, and Manuel Farias Jr., who was 20. Police said it did not appear any of them were armed.
Based on the surveillance video, the gunman was eventually identified as Torres, a known Sureo whose rap sheet to that point was limited to property crimes or drug or alcohol violations. He was taken into custody weeks later at a home in the Granger area.
The shooting was the first of 25 homicides in Yakima County in 2009, about 10 of them involving a gang motive.
