Kamiakin girls win regional cross country title

SPOKANE -- The Kamiakin girls cross country team is not a brash and boisterous bunch -- not publicly, anyway -- but the statement the Braves made Saturday easily will be heard all over the state.

Stephanie Rexus and Michelle Fletcher finished 3-4 and led a Braves barrage as all five scoring runners placed in the top 15 at the Eastern Washington 3A regional girls meet at Wandermere Golf Course.

Kamiakin finished with just 31 points, less than half the score of two-time defending regional champ Shadle Park (63).

"I'm so proud of this team," Fletcher said. "Everybody stepped up to do what they had to.

"It feels kind of unreal. We're just normal people. Our school has only ever won one other regional title, and that was in 2003. Our goal is to match that team."

Last year, the Braves finished a point behind Shadle for the regional crown and went on to place fourth at state.

Mount Spokane picked up the region's third berth to next week's state meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The Wildcats got 64 points, one fewer than Southridge.

Suns senior Rachel Dahl, who placed sixth to earn a return trip to state, hoped to bring an entire team with her to cap her high school career.

"I wish I ran better for the team," said Dahl, who finished 19th at state last year. "I was really hoping we would qualify for state. We were really hoping to be the first (Southridge girls team) to qualify.

"We have a good group of hard-working girls, and I was hoping to make it to state with them."

Instead, Dahl must settle for having one teammate at state as freshman Emily Kump placed 10th. Junior Leslie Olsen just missed the cut, finishing 16th. The top 15 individuals and three teams advance.

Rexus and Fletcher were followed by teammates Sydney Blaser (ninth), Natalie Cory (13th) and Brittany Brooks (14th).

"They ran absolutely perfect," Braves coach Shaun Suss said. "It played out exactly what we were hoping for -- best-case scenario."

Class 4A

In the 4A race, a quartet of Mid-Columbians qualified for state: Richland's Lindsey Bradley (third) and Lauren Perry (12th), and Walla Walla's Rachel Nelson (sixth) and Hannah Hampson (14th).

The Bombers have qualified a runner for state in eight consecutive seasons. They finished in fourth, 22 points away from a team berth despite having just one senior among their varsity seven.

For Nelson, a junior, it is her third top-10 finish at regionals. Her day went exactly as planned.

She was pleased to finally have some company at state with Hampson, who finished 44th at regionals last year but jumped up 30 spots.

"She's improved so much," Nelson said.

Bradley, a freshman, finished a second behind second-place finisher Mayra Chavez of Eisenhower. Fellow Bomber freshman Sidney Bullock just missed a state berth, placing 17th.

For Perry, who played volleyball at this time last year, the trip to state comes after placing third in the 800 meters in track last spring and seventh in the 1,600.

"I wanted to see if I could go to state in cross country also," the sophomore said. "I feel pretty good about how I did. I didn't train at all this summer. I hope to just keep getting better."
