ELLENSBURG -- Melissa Merrill and sisters Stephanie and Lisa Tixier turned in sparkling performances to help Hanford take the 3A crown at the District 5/6/7 Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday in Ellensburg.

The Falcons won nine of 12 events to finish with 546 points, outpacing second-place Southridge (331) and third-place West Valley (301).

Merrill, the CBBN 3A Swimmer of the Year, was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 freestyle, as well as in the 200 free relay with Linnea Peacock, Kayla Burnight and Taylor Fievez.

Merrill is eager to get another crack at the 100 free during the state championships, scheduled for Nov. 10-12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. She finished eighth at state in 2010 with a final time of 55.77 seconds, but she blew that time out of the water Saturday, clocking 53.60.

"Last year, I didn't do my best because of a foot injury, so I'm pretty excited to have another chance to do it again," said Merrill, a senior.

Junior Stephanie Tixier lowered her district record in the 100 butterfly, winning in 58.03 seconds, and took the 50 free in 24.92. She joined younger sister Lisa on the winning 200 medley relay team with Fievez and Shaylee Keiffer.

Other 3A winners were Southridge's Danielle Freund (diving), West Valley's Keely Hausken (100 backstroke) and Sunnyside's Marisa Broersma (100 breaststroke).

The 4A race proved to be a nailbiter between Richland and Wenatchee. The Bombers came up just short, losing 527-513.

"The diving was the difference," said Richland coach Kathy Piper, whose Bombers beat the Panthers for the CBBN 4A title. "They had four divers. We had two. We outswam them, but they had the four divers. It's part of the deal."

Sophomore Lisa Bratton did her part to keep Richland in the hunt, setting a district record of 2:06.91 in the 200 IM. She won the 500 free and was on the winning 200 medley relay team with Mackenzie Ruby, Sarah Olsen and Vanessa Whattam.

In 1A/2A action, Othello senior Natilee Ruiz set district records in the 100 free (52.59) and 200 IM (2:07.76). Prosser junior Hailey Rankin won the 100 butterfly in a district-record time of 1:00.43 and the 500 free in a school-record time of 5:19.07. Rankin also swam on the state-qualifying 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.
