PASCO -- All Chiawana coach Steve Graff needed was one yard from Miquiyah Zamora.

Zamora gave him that and a lot more, taking a fourth-quarter handoff on fourth down and busting up the middle for a 40-yard touchdown to secure a 27-13 CBBN 4A victory over the Wenatchee Panthers.

The Riverhawks (8-0, 6-0 CBBN 4A) secured their second consecutive league title and set up a crossover playoff matchup against Central Valley on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Edgar Brown Stadium.

"Everybody knew (Zamora) was getting it," Graff said. "Unless they split a seam and stopped him in the backfield, I knew he was going to get us a yard."

The touchdown came at a critical time, after Wenatchee pulled to within 21-13 on a 7-yard fourth-quarter run by Isaiah Brandt-Sims with just over 5 minutes left.

The Riverhawks needed to answer back, and who better to do it than their returning all-CBBN utilityman?

Zamora also made a clutch play to set up his touchdown, running a seam route along the left hash and hauling in an 18-yard pass from Joey Zamora on third-and-17 from the Chiawana 41.

Graff called a timeout to discuss the next play.

"On the sidelines, the coaches asked if we could run counter or zone," said Riverhawks right tackle Gates Michel. "We went with the 26 Zone and hit them in the mouth. That's when Miquiyah broke off for a big score."

It was Zamora's second touchdown of the day. He scored Chiawana's first TD on a second-quarter fade route, where he out-leaped cornerback Eric Carlson for the ball in the right corner for a 7-3 lead.

But getting the handoff was somewhat unexpected for Zamora, especially since Terro Bell had already rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

"I didn't know I was going to get to play running back at all," Zamora said. "But the line opened up a hole like the Red Sea. I got past the line and just had to beat one more guy, and he was kind of flat-footed."

The Riverhawks started slow, fumbling away their first drive on their own 42-yard line to set up the Panthers' first score -- a 20-yard field goal from Brock Fuller to make it 3-0.

Zamora's receiving TD made it 7-3 on the first drive of the second quarter, and Caleb Huisingh intercepted Wenatchee quarterback Dillon Sugg at the Wenatchee 46 just 1:23 later. That set up Chiawana's next score, a 26-yard scamper between center Chandler Newell and right guard Ryan Garcia to make it 14-3 at halftime.

"It took a while to get the rust off from the bye week. We've still got a lot of sophomores who haven't been through all this," Graff said. "It took us a while to adjust on defense. We were scrambling around and couldn't get lined up right."

The Panthers brought some dangerous weapons of their own -- mainly running back Isaiah Brandt-Sims, who rushed 24 times for 112 yards and a TD. Spencer Smith and Blake Aguilar also combined for 83 yards on 22 carries.

But the Riverhawks did their job not letting the Panthers break off a big play.

"(Brandt-Sims) is fast. We had to keep him contained," Michel said. "He chunked away at us but we stopped him from making any huge gains."

Chiawana's win also knocked Wenatchee into a three-way tiebreaker with Davis and Richland for the final crossover playoff spot. The tiebreaker will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lions Field in Moses Lake.

The Riverhawks have a lot to prepare for themselves against Central Valley (7-2), who feature quarterback Gaven Deyarmin (94-165-10-1,392, 12 touchdowns) and running back Alex Jacot (91-463, 9 TDs).

"We're going to have to step up every part of our game," Bell said. "We'll have to go all out in practice this week."
