Othello's Ruiz sets district swim marks

Othello senior Natilee Ruiz got a pair of Class 2A district records on the first day of the District 5/6/7 swimming championships in Ellensburg.

Ruiz entered Friday as the district-record holder in the 50-yard freestyle, 200 free, 500 free and 100 backstroke. She added her name to the record books in the 100 free (54.85 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2 minutes, 11.85 seconds).

Prosser junior Hailey Rankin broke former teammate Mackenzie Gant's district record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.96. Rankin also achieved a state-qualifying time of 5:35.79 in the 500 free. But her district record in the 100 breaststroke fell when Ellensburg freshman Taylor Wilson clocked in at 1:09.68.

In 4A, Richland sophomore Lisa Bratton was seeded first in today's 200 IM final after clocking a state qualifying time of 2:12.72. She also leads a Bomber contingent in the 500 free final -- juniors Nicole Weinman, Sarah Olsen and Lucy Hernandez are seeded second, third and fifth in the eight-person field.

Richland juniors Mackenzie Ruby (100 back, 1:01.26) and Olsen (100 butterfly, 59.66) earned state qualifying times, as did Walla Walla sophomore Emma Timm-Ballard (100 back, 59.66).

At the 3A level, Hanford junior Stephanie Tixier (50 free, 24.77; 100 fly, 58.74) and senior Melissa Merrill (200 IM, 2:14.53; 100 free, 54.66) got two state qualifying times apiece, as did Kennewick junior Hailey Murphy (200 IM, 2:18.03; 100 fly, 1:01.51).

Southridge had three state qualifiers: freshman Rachel Schafer (100 fly, 1:01.62) and seniors Alisha Sanchez (50 free, 25.67) and Megan O'Leary (100 free, 56.11; 100 back, 1:03.44). Sunnyside senior Marisa Broersma lowered her state qualifying time in the 100 breast to 1:11.66.

The finals begin at 8:45 a.m. today at the Central Washington University Aquatic Center.
