The Benton Conservation District and the Umatilla County Soil & Water Conservation District are working together to offer naturescaping and heritage garden workshops in Kennewick and Pendleton on Nov. 5-6.
The free workshops are open to the public.
The Saturday workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mid-Columbia Libraries, 1620 S. Union St., Kennewick.
The Sunday workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blue Mountain College, Oregon State University Extension conference room, 2411 N.W. Carden Ave., Pendleton.
Participants will learn how to design beautifully landscaped areas that feature native and low-water use plants. Speakers discuss proper watering techniques and offer tips about how to control weeds. Homeowners will learn how to make property more resistant to the damage of wildfires through landscape planning and maintenance.
Amy Jo Detweiler of Oregon State University Extension will talk about "Waterwise Gardening: Creating Your Own Xeriscape."
Ruth Whittaker from the Tribal Native Plant Nursery will educate participants about "Naturescaping to Enhance Both Human and Ecosystem Vitality," including cultural and traditional medicinal properties of local native plants.
Brett Van Paegeghem from Idaho Bureau of Land Management will teach "Firewise Landscaping."
Seating is limited, so registration is suggested. Free lunch included for everyone registering before Nov. 1.
