Sirens will sound today in the final monthly test for an emergency at the Umatilla Chemical Depot.

For more than two decades, the Oregon Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program has worked to protect the communities near the depot. However, today the last bulk container of chemical weapon agent at the depot is expected to be incinerated, and a few days later the last of the chemical weapon agent drained recently from containers should be incinerated.

After all chemical weapon agent is gone, Oregon sirens will be dismantled and sent to coastal communities for tsunami warning systems. Washington sirens will be disposed of by a contractor.

For the last test, sirens will be sounded at noon in southern Benton County near the Columbia River and in Umatilla and Morrow counties. The siren test will be followed by a message in English and Spanish, saying it was a test. Tone alert radios also will be tested.
