Initiative 1163: No

The public passed initiative 1029, requiring long-term caregivers to receive training. Did you know that you are supposed to be paying for it? You are supposed to be paying for the person to take the training, someone to cover their shift and someone to train them!

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has spent over $1 milllion dollars on this new initiative. Why? Because legislators last session decided services to the elderly and disabled were more important than extra training.

I personally thank them for this. Services are minimal and needed greatly! If passed, $31 million will be needed in the first year. The money needs to come from somewhere!

As it stands now, the Department of Social and Health Services has been asked to submit another 10 percent cut, which will now eliminate all services for 8,600 people. Last session, $83 million was eliminated for services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Without support, parents will need to quit their jobs and stay home with their child, some will live on the street and some will probably end in jail.

Who will they take care of once they are trained?

Please vote no on I -1163. Rejecting this initiative is in the best interest of those who need help most.
